The Nuclear Option

Posted by Tom Bodden on April 13, 2007 4:23 PM |

Ynys Mon Labour MP Albert Owen bent my ear before the inaugural Cardiff-Valley flight over the political fall-out on Anglesey regarding the future of the Wylfa nuclear power plant.
The MP and Labour Assembly candidate Jonathan Austin then both sent me Press Releases hopping mad that Plaid Cymru leader and Ynys Mon AM Ieuan Wyn Jones had declared his conditional backing for a new Wylfa B station on the island.
Mr Jones lashed back accusing them of mischief-making.
Phew this is so sensitive, it's almost raw.

Mr Owen said: "Throughout the Energy Review there was no vocal support from either their Leader or their party and only a few weeks ago their pre-election document made clear that Plaid Cymru is opposed to nuclear power.
"It is both bizarre and disingenuous that during an election campaign the Party (Plaid Cymru) is trying to cobble together a position to save face and votes here on Anglesey."
Mr Jones, who split from Plaid's no nuclear stance to support Wylfa B, was not best pleased to be asked the question again when I spoke to him.
He snapped: "Labour's strategy for Anglesey was based on the presumption that I would be against Wylfa B.
"Now I have made my position clear, they haven't got a strategy so all they can do is smear me. I think it's despicable."
And there is still almost three weeks to go until polling day.

Hi Tom,

We met in Brussels, sat next to you at the MEP's meeting.

On the issue of Wylfa B, i think Ieuann Whinge Jones should be called out about this because it is at odds with his own parties policy on nuclear power. You cant say 'the party i lead is against nuclear power, unless it involves my constituents losing jobs'...

its inherently obvious that Plaid will ditch many core values to jump on election bandwagons...Why doesnt independence even get a mention any more? surely Plaid's existence is based on that premise...
