Where's Lembit #2?

Posted by Tom Bodden on April 16, 2007 10:58 PM |

Liberal Democrat Peter Black was among candidates to reflect on their Assembly campaigning strategies after Page 3 revelations in some of the tabloids.
Welsh leader Lembit Opik had taken an Easter break with Cheeky Girl Friend Gabriela Irimia in the Canaries.
Tory hopeful Glyn Davies was equally in reflective mood.

It was encouraging to see Welsh politics make the London papers even if it was in the shape of Mr Opik and pop duet girl friend Gabriela.
Apart from a heavyweight leader article describing the Assembly polls as the ‘forgotten election’ it is difficult to recall such an interest in matters this side of Offa’s Dyke.
Liberal Democrats standing in the Welsh general election might well wonder what to make of the tabloid pictures of bikini-clad Miss Irimia and Mr Opik during time out from politics.
Just what would they give for the chance to have that kind of pulling power?
Mr Opik was back at work this morning campaigning on youth issues in Llandrillo college.
Should we care too much about his private life?

You tend to get the impression that Lembit has lost interest in representative politics. I can only assume that the rumours about him looking for a media job after standing down before the next election, may have some foundation.

It's a shame, as he's a real character despite being a Lib Dem.
