Ex-Labour MP says 'vote Wigley'

Posted by Tom Bodden on May 1, 2007 12:48 PM |

Former Labour MP for Clwyd West Gareth Thomas has promised his second vote in the Assembly elections to Plaid Cymru's Dafydd Wigley.
Mr Thomas, who narrowly lost his seat at Westminster to the Conservatives in 2005, expects that he served notice on his Labour Party membership with the public announcement this afternoon.

Mr Thomas' first vote will still go to Labour's Alun Pugh, but the barrister from Ruthin, said: "I just feel Dafydd Wigley is a great candidate and it would be a shame not to have him in the Assembly, a man of experience, stature, vision and passion."
Mr Wigley is number two on the Plaid regional list and would require a huge regional vote to secure a seat under the PR system, especially if Plaid does better first-past-the-post in the constituencies.
A Labour spokesman said: "Gareth Thomas has made it clear that this is not support for Plaid Cyrmu, but for one individual list candidate.
"There does seem to be a movement in North Wales of "vote Labour, get Wigley" - from those who would like to see Dafydd Wigley as a regional AM.
"Indeed, even members of Plaid Cymru are telling us that they would be prepared to sacrifice Ieuan Wyn Jones or Alun Ffred Jones, in order to see Dafydd Wigley elected."
Dafydd Wigley was delighted with Mr Thomas' support: "To get in on the list, I'll need the support from more people who haven't voted Plaid Cymru before," he said.
Mr Wigley says the Plaid leader Ieuan Wyn Jones' vote on Ynys Mon was running at 47%, according to canvassing returns, and he should have no trouble on Thursday.

Would Gareth have made these comments if he was still MP?
