Rhodri Morgan preferred to talk about rugby when asked if Gareth Thomas should be kicked out of the Labour party for backing Plaid's Dafydd Wigley.
When reminded that the Gareth Thomas in question was the former Labour MP for Clwyd West, not the Wales captain, he thought a 'Vote Labour get Wigley' strategy could actually help him to return to government.
Mr Morgan told the final Labour election news conference that he travelled back from election campaigning in North Wales marginals, to catch the second half of the Blues v Dragons match.
But he didn't seem too bothered that the other Gareth Thomas planned to vote for Plaid Cymru in the regional ballot.
"An awful lot of people have been saying in North Wales, vote Labour get Wigley, the very strong Wigley supporters want him back.
"But there is no point in doing that (voting Plaid on the list ballot) unless you vote Labour in the first ballot.
"We would have to win Clwyd West, and Arfon or Ynys Mon for Plaid to gain a second list seat."
And Labour Party discipline was not a matter for him - there was a special disciplinary panel that dealt with all that.
