New job for Lord Wyn

Posted by Tom Bodden on March 1, 2008 11:30 AM |

David Cameron has just been speaking to the Conservative faithful in Llandudno.
He sprung a St David's Day surprise by bringing newly retired Lord 'Wyn' Roberts, 77, out of retirement to head a review of the party's attitude to devolution.

The veteran former Conwy MP will receive a special tribute from the Welsh Conservatives on Sunday for his long service at Westminster where he was frontbench spokesman in the Lords until recently.
He will earn another tribute if he can bridge the divide over devolution between those who would have none of it by choice and those like Assembly leader Nick Bourne who would embrace extra powers in Cardiff Bay.
His interim report is expected by July.
'Sir Wyn' was playing it cool: "It's very very early days, I'm currently thinking how to approach the subject."
Mr Cameron says that the present devolution settlement in Wales and Scotland has not solved the issue.
"We need to do what they (Labour) didn't do instead of rushing from one solution to the next but actually stop and think and try to come up with what would be an effective resting place, were we could say this is the right settlement, This is the right resting place," he said.
No, he's not suggesting burying the issue of devolution once and for all, right.
::David Cameron told the conference he always felt welcome in Wales.
More welcome than he felt the other day when he got an e-mail from someone called 'David Cameron'.
It said: "I was born before you, my name is David Cameron and you're making my life a misery, could you please change your name."
:: A copy of a speech by Conservative health spokesman Jonathan Morgan was circulated in advance to the media with the usual 'check against delivery' warning.
It began: "Whilst I am supposed to stick to the script in this session, I cannot resist paying tribute to the tremendous progress this party has made over the last year, particlularly in last May's Assembly elections."
Which just goes to show that even deviation from the script can sometimes be scripted.
